A Steyn City Foundation Initiative
Johannesburg, October 2019: On Friday, The Star together with Steyn City hosted a charity golf day at the magnificent Steyn City Golf Course for the lifestyle resort’s annual flagship CSI initiative, Delivering Happiness to Diepsloot.
Now, in its eighth year, this yearly spectacle wherein Santas board a convoy of trucks and spread much festive cheer to over 13 000 primary school children of Diepsloot, caught The Star’s attention last year. This was largely due to the model of good neighbourliness that they’d like to see replicated countrywide.
The weather held out as the sun shone favourably on a full field of sporting legends from mainstream sports; soccer, rugby, and cricket including the likes of Jeremy Guscott, Akona Ndungane, Ryan Kanskowsi, Shaun Bartlett, Bryden Rose, OG Molefe and Terry Paine to name a few, as well as sponsors, the corporate sector and entrepreneurs. Since inception, Steyn City’s sister company Auto and General is a main sponsor donating substantial funds as well as providing water bottles while Bidvest joins as a sponsor for the first time providing essential stationery packs for the learners.
During prize-giving, MC Neil Andrews hosted an auction for the main prizes: two hospitality suites at Wanderers Stadium inclusive of hospitality for 25 guests, at the upcoming test match South Africa versus England in early 2020. These incredible prizes raised significant monies together with a notable number of pledges for schoolbags throughout the evening from individual players, enabling The Star and Steyn City to help deliver happiness to their neighbours Diepsloot. Other sponsors included Diageo, City of Johannesburg, Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Orlando Pirates, Jozi Stars Lions Cricket and Playmore Golf, all of which donated generous prizes and / or made significant pledges on the night.
The Star invites its readers to get involved by simply pledging R200 per schoolbag filled with important back to school items by visiting www.pledgeabag.co.za. A single donation will help to change a young learner’s life and provide them with hope.
